Crocus sativus, SAFFRON CROCUS

This is the bulb the expensive saffron seasoning comes from. It begins blooming in September and continues through October. The lavender flowers are the same size and shape as spring blooming crocus and make a wonderful addition to the rock garden or border for fall color. The orange-red stigmas are the source of saffron, the worlds most expensive spice! To harvest saffron, pluck the stigmas with tweezers as soon as the flowers open, dry and store in an air tight container. It is said that 1 dozen stigmas will season a good sized paella or similar dish. The foliage has very narrow, solid green grasslike leaves.

Plant in full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. The general rule for bulbs is to plant them no more than 4 times deep as they are big, so for a 1 inch bulb plant no more than 4 inches deep. PLANTING TOO DEEP MAY REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF BLOOMS. Good in borders and rock gardens, easy carefree plant. It grows 3-5inches tall. Best in Zones 6-8 in the South and Zones 6-9 in the West. Colder zones may still grow saffron but the corms will need to be lifted and stored over winter. Replant in late spring-summer. Saffron goes dormant in Spring and needs a hot, dry summer rest period to rebloom again in the Fall.

Saffron Crocus is shipped in SEPTEMBER, they should be planted in September/October or they may not bloom properly.
