Dicentra formosa, WESTERN BLEEDING HEART

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH ~DICENTRA 'LUXURIANT'~ OFTEN ADVERTISED AS A PNW NATIVE. THAT IS A LIE. DICENTRA EXIMA IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SPECIES, NOT NATIVE TO THE PNW. THST IS A COMMON LIE PERPETUATED BY CHEAP WHOLESALE IMPORT PLANT COMPANIES.

Native to the Western US, this native spreads freely by rhizomes and keeps the attractive foliage throughout the summer and reblooms with pink, drooping flowers.

The delicate ferny foliage grows about 10 inches high with the blooms about 12 inches, it will rebloom freely if deadheaded. It is much tougher than it looks. In their native habitat (Pacific Coast to Cascade Foothills) they thrive in shade where there is no competition. In cultivation they thrive in shade to part sun, (full sun in not too hot areas) little water and will bloom 2-3 times per season if deadheaded. The key to success with these delicate appearing beauties is no competition from other plants, they do perform very well with bulbs. They prefer humusy, well-drained soil and are quite drought tolerant if mulched. These plants can form a beautiful, ferny carpet in the spring and summer, they are dormant in winter.

They may not thrive in warm winter climates.

USDA zones: 4-8

Shade to full sun

Plant 2-3 inches deep

GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS COME WITH THE SEEDS.

NEARLY ALL OF THE DAVE'S GARDEN FEEDBACK WAS FOR LILIUM, BUT I HAD FAR MORE INVESTED IN NATIVE PLANTS AND BULBS, ALL OF WHICH ARE NOW EXTINCT DUE TO THE ANTI-FARMING ATTITUDE IN OREGON.
