WHITE MOTH MULLEIN, Verbascum blattaria albiflorum, Verbascum blattaria forma erubescens

Moth mullein gets its name from the fuzzy purple stamens, resembling a moth's antennae. This introduced biennial plant is 2-4' tall on stout-stemmed, spikes covered with lovely white to pink blooms. It grows in disturbed places from a basal rosette of evergreen leaves. A common roadside weed it is a very attrative plant and shines in the perennial bed or wildflower meadow. The flowers have a corolla of five white petals with densely-hairy purple-pink stamens. Moth mullein may be found to an elevation of 5000' and blooms from May to September.

Each flower is up to 1 inch across, with 5 spreading petals, 5 stamens, a hairy green calyx with 5 pointed lobes, and a single pistil with a green stigma. The petals are white with a pink tint. The center of the flower has fine purple hairs around the stamens and the base of the petals are often some shade of purple or pink.

Cultivation: Moth Mullein is an easy plant that grows in full sunlight, moist to dry conditions, and rather poor soil. In dry poor soil, this plant can be rather small, while at sites with rich soil and moisture it can become rather large. It prefers disturbed areas and is not significantly invasive of natural areas

NEARLY ALL OF THE DAVE'S GARDEN FEEDBACK WAS FOR LILIUM, BUT I HAD FAR MORE INVESTED IN NATIVE PLANTS AND BULBS, ALL OF WHICH ARE NOW EXTINCT DUE TO THE ANTI-FARMING ATTITUDE IN OREGON.
