Allium christophii, STAR OF PERSIA

Metallic purple blooms in the late spring, one of the most beautiful onions in the genus! Blooms gradually dry and turn tan providing a visual treat all summer and into the fall. Blooms also last well as cut flowers with no offensive smell. The blooms consist of many small starry flowers in large purple globose clusters, up to 12 inches in diameter, on 12-20 inch tall stems. The flower stems dry easily, and are great additions to dry flower arrangements. These have bluish-green strap-like leaves, with silky hair on the underside, up to 18 inches long (45 cm), the leaves disappear as the flowers open, and are usually all dried up and gone before the blooms have faded. This makes for a very short growing season and these onions are VERY slow growers, it takes many years from seed to bloom size bulb. These are not bothered by deer, rodents or slugs, there can be some problems with underground pests such as bulb mites and maggots.
Star of Persia is very happy growing in a landscape with other plants, since it loses the foliage early, by the time when it blooms in May, planting with hosta or another deciduous plant works very well.

Hardy in zones 4 - 8.

Planting depth to base of bulb: 4 - 8 inches

Spacing between bulbs: 12 inches

Light requirements: full sun to part shade

Good drainage

NEARLY ALL OF THE DAVE'S GARDEN FEEDBACK WAS FOR LILIUM, BUT I HAD FAR MORE INVESTED IN NATIVE PLANTS AND BULBS, ALL OF WHICH ARE NOW EXTINCT DUE TO THE ANTI-FARMING ATTITUDE IN OREGON.
