Daphne mezereum, February Daphne, Garland Flower

A small deciduous shrub growing to 3 feet tall. The flowers are produced in early spring on the bare stems before the leaves appear. In good climates the bloom is in late winter. They have a four-lobed pink or light purple, scented blooms. The fruit is a bright red berry.

This plant and the berries are toxic, although birds may eat the berries plant destroying mammals will leave it alone.

It prefers moist alkaline soil on the edge of the woods. It can grow in light shade or full sun. Once sited it is best to leave it alone as it resents root disturbance.

USDA Zone 3 - 8

Seed can take over 2 years to germinate

Plants are yearling seedlings, only a few inches tall (about 3 - 4") due to the toxic climate they have to grow in here. They will grow much faster somewhere else. Shipped bare root when weather permits

NEARLY ALL OF THE DAVE'S GARDEN FEEDBACK WAS FOR LILIUM, BUT I HAD FAR MORE INVESTED IN NATIVE PLANTS AND BULBS, ALL OF WHICH ARE NOW EXTINCT DUE TO THE ANTI-FARMING ATTITUDE IN OREGON.
