DESCRIPTION

Iris ensata, Japanese Iris

Japanese iris are a group of beardless iris (I. ensata, formerly I. kaempferi) which are the last to bloom, about a month after the tall bearded and Siberian iris. The largest flowers of all iris, with lovely forms, colors and patterns, they require full sun, good soil and ample water. Mulch will help hold in water and reduce weeds.

The Japanese iris produces large, flat blooms in shades of blue, pink, white and purple, with bicolored stripes, veins and blotches. They are tall, reaching 24 to 30 inches in height. These bloom in late spring or early summer and are great for extending the iris season. The foliage is bright green with a prominent rib and very attractive.

The Japanese iris complements a water garden, pond or creek and actually can be grown in water. These can be grown in large pots if kept well watered, or partially submerged in a pond. They also do well in a ditch, pond, creekside or other damp places as well in fertile moist soils.

Japanese irises perform best with at least six hours of sunlight per day. Too much shade reduces blooming. The soil should be fertile, organic-rich and acidic to neutral. Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season.

NEARLY ALL OF THE DAVE'S GARDEN FEEDBACK WAS FOR LILIUM, BUT I HAD FAR MORE INVESTED IN NATIVE PLANTS AND BULBS, ALL OF WHICH ARE NOW EXTINCT DUE TO THE ANTI-FARMING ATTITUDE IN OREGON.
