DESCRIPTION

Asclepias verticillata, Horsetail Milkweed, whorled milkweed

Whorled Milkweed can bloom anytime between July and September, which is later in the year than most Milkweeds. The white flowers can be a greenish-white. When mature it reaches a height around 2'. The nectar of the flowers attracts many kinds of insects, including long-tongued bees, short-tongued bees, wasps, flies, butterflies, skippers and beetles.

Best in sunny locations with well drained soil. Nearly needle-like foliage appears in whorls of 3-6 at each node. Milkweed is a nectar source for Monarch butterflies and also a host plant for them to lay their eggs. Plant in groups to attract more butterflies.

Zones 4 to 9

PLANTS ARE YEARLINGS THAT WILL BE SENT BARE ROOT

THESE CAN BE PLANTED HORIZONTALLY AND THEY WILL GROW JUST FINE, LONG ROOTS AND A THIN TOP CAN MAKE THEM DIFFICULT TO TELL WHICH END IS UP.

NEARLY ALL OF THE DAVE'S GARDEN FEEDBACK WAS FOR LILIUM, BUT I HAD FAR MORE INVESTED IN NATIVE PLANTS AND BULBS, ALL OF WHICH ARE NOW EXTINCT DUE TO THE ANTI-FARMING ATTITUDE IN OREGON.
