DESCRIPTION

Thujopsis dolabrata, HIBA CEDAR

also called Hiba, False aborvitae, or Hiba arborvitae.

Thujopsis is a conifer in the cypress family (Cupressaceae), the sole member of the genus being Thujopsis dolabrata. It is endemic to Japan. It is similar to the closely related genus Thuja (Arborvitae), differing in the striking, broader, thicker and veined leaves and very attractive thick cones.

One of the most noticeable features of the hiba tree is that it looks artificial. The foliage is fan-shaped, similar to the leaves of other members of the cypress family. But unlike the cypresses, the leaves of the hiba are deep green and glossy to the point of looking plastic, with a white underside that has a narrow green border and only adds to its synthetic appearance.

Making up each branchlet are scale-like leaves that resemble tiny axe-heads and gave rise to its botanical name 'dolabra', which literally translated means hatchet. In its native Japan, the timber of the tree, which is light but strong and hard-wearing, has historically been used for building. Indeed, at one time, it was one of the five sacred trees of Japan, and as such was preserved for use by the royal family and in religious contexts.

Introduced to the British Isles in the 1850s, today it is largely grown for its ornamental value and can grow to 20m (65ft) given the right conditions. The hiba cannot tolerate drought or excessive heat or drought.

NEARLY ALL OF THE DAVE'S GARDEN FEEDBACK WAS FOR LILIUM, BUT I HAD FAR MORE INVESTED IN NATIVE PLANTS AND BULBS, ALL OF WHICH ARE NOW EXTINCT DUE TO THE ANTI-FARMING ATTITUDE IN OREGON.
