DESCRIPTION

Adiantum pedatum, Maidenhair Fern

Maidenhair ferns are pretty, dainty, and delicate. They have wiry, black petioles and feathery, circular fronds that grow outward in a flat, fan-like position. This graceful, fan-like pattern is unique among native ferns. Plants are slow spreading and non-invasive. They grow from underground rhizomes so give them plenty of moisture and room to grow. Semi-deciduous, meaning they lose the foliage in the winter, except in mild winters they can retain the leaves all year.

Maidenhair ferns remain attractive from spring to fall when planted in humus-rich, well-drained soil that is kept moist at all times. Give them a cool site in part to full shade. They also do very well in containers, keep moist or the leaves will brown. They can be grown indoors in pots or hanging baskets in a bright spot out of direct sun.

Natural Habitat: shady seeps, streamsides and other areas that remain moist all summer but not waterlogged.

Zones 3 - 8

Size at Maturity: 1 - 3 ft tall

NEARLY ALL OF THE DAVE'S GARDEN FEEDBACK WAS FOR LILIUM, BUT I HAD FAR MORE INVESTED IN NATIVE PLANTS AND BULBS, ALL OF WHICH ARE NOW EXTINCT DUE TO THE ANTI-FARMING ATTITUDE IN OREGON.
